Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Life in the UK Test and how to practise for it
Is this practice test really free?
Yes. Every question, mock test, chapter quiz, explanation, and score report on LifeUKPractice is completely free — no signup, no email, no credit card, and no trial that expires. You can retake any test as many times as you like.
Are these the real Life in the UK Test questions?
No — and no honest site can offer them. The official question bank is confidential Crown copyright and is not published. Our questions are original, written to test the same facts from the official handbook, "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents". Scoring well here is strong evidence you are ready, not a preview of the exact questions you will see.
How many questions is the real test and what is the pass mark?
The real Life in the UK Test has 24 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes to answer them. The pass mark is 75%, which means at least 18 of 24 correct — 17 or fewer is a fail. Our mock tests are built to the same shape and marked to the same pass mark.
Who has to take the Life in the UK Test?
Most people applying for British citizenship (naturalisation) or for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) must pass it. You are exempt if you are under 18, are 65 or over, have a long-term physical or mental condition (with a doctor’s letter or exemption form), or have already passed it — for example when you settled and are now applying for citizenship. Always confirm your own situation on GOV.UK.
How should I use this site to prepare?
Read the official handbook, then use the 10 chapter quizzes to revise one subject at a time until each feels solid. When you are close, sit the full-length 24-question mock tests under exam conditions and aim to score comfortably above the 75% pass mark before you book. Every answer comes with an explanation so you learn the fact, not just the letter.
How much does the real test cost and how do I book it?
The real test costs £50, paid online when you book through the official GOV.UK service at least 3 days in advance. Our how-to-book guide walks through the whole process, and you should always confirm current fees and rules on GOV.UK.
Are the rules about to change?
The government’s May 2025 immigration white paper proposed reforms — including a move toward an "earned settlement" model, a longer standard qualifying period for settlement, and a review of the Life in the UK Test. These are proposals under consultation and are not yet in force: the current 24-question, 45-minute, 75% test based on the 3rd-edition handbook still applies. Always check GOV.UK for the current rules before booking or applying.
